TYPOGRAPHIC CALENDAR

“The Mind Is a Powerful Place” is a typographic calendar that explores the tension between negative and positive states of mind. Each month shows two opposing words represented through various typography, photography and designs in a layered composition. Negative words are displayed through analog type and supporting visuals in the background while positive words are shown through masked imagery within text as well as analog pattern. The back of the calendar stands as a journal to write in about how you are feeling and get things off of your chest. The project was created to visually communicate the power of the mind and emotional balance. Overall, my goal was to create something that was relatable for those struggling with their mental health.

The design process was highly experimental. It evolved slowly, through many changes in layout, color, and overall style, before reaching a cohesive visual system that could be carried consistently across all twelve months. My favorite part of this piece was the hand-drawn analog typography for the positive word; each word is repeated at the bottom of each calendar month, creating a unique pattern for each composition. This patterned analog type ended up being the cover art as well for the calendar: each positive word patterned combined into a layered design. The calendar offers a true visual exploration of how the mind can shift from darkness to light.
